Autumn Layering Ideas: Soft Knits, Midi Dresses and Washed Denim

Autumn dressing is really just about one good layer. Once you have a knit that feels like a hug and a dress that moves when you do, everything else falls into place. Here is the small edit we keep coming back to this season, built around soft textures, quiet neutrals and pieces that genuinely get worn on repeat.

Start with the knit that works hard

A loose, slightly oversized knit is the easiest thing in your wardrobe to build on. Wear it on its own with high-rise washed jeans and a pair of boots for coffee and errands, then add a midi dress underneath when the temperature drops. The reason we love this approach is that you only really own two or three knits, and they look completely different depending on what you layer them over.

Look for a V-neck if you want a little skin at the collarbone, or a higher crew if you prefer your layers to stay neat under a coat. Soft, slightly fuzzy knits also hold their shape better through a long day, which matters if you are wearing them from a morning flight to an evening dinner.

Dresses do the heavy lifting

One of the easiest ways to make autumn dressing feel put-together without trying is to wear a dress and let a knit do the styling. A printed sleeveless dress under a chunky sweater, sleeves pushed up just past the wrist, is a look that works for everything from a slow Sunday to a Friday office that leans casual. It also solves the 'nothing to wear but nothing to wear' mornings very quickly.

For longer days, a maxi with a soft print does the same thing. The V-neck split floral maxi dress is the kind of piece that photographs beautifully and moves well, and a fine knit over the top keeps the whole thing autumn-appropriate rather than summery.

Denim, but make it soft

Autumn is the season for denim that has been lived in a little. Washed and faded pairs sit much better with knits and flowy skirts because they are not stiff against the leg. Style them with a tucked-in tee under your cardigan, or with a slip-style dress and a belt to define the waist.

If you are starting a capsule wardrobe this year, the New In edit is worth a scroll before you commit to anything. That is where we put the pieces we would buy again ourselves, and it is the fastest way to find matching knits and dresses without hunting.

Three outfits we keep re-wearing

  • Soft knits and jeans. Oversized sweater, straight-leg washed denim, ankle boots, gold hoops. The everyday uniform that still looks intentional.
  • Floral dress under a knit. Sleeveless printed dress, fine V-neck knit worn open, flat shoes or loafers. Works for the office and dinner afterwards.
  • Maxi with a belt. Floral maxi dress cinched with a slim belt, cardigan over the arms, crossbody bag for errands.

All three are built from pieces you can mix and match, which is the whole point of a small wardrobe. And if you are building yours now, free shipping is on every order over $49, so you can pick out a knit and a dress together and have them on their way.

Layering is much easier when the pieces underneath are good on their own. Start with one dress you love and one knit that feels like a hug, and the rest writes itself.
